Herbalistas: Inspiring Female Herbalists
The month of March marks Women's History Month. This is a month to reflect on the contributions women have made to society, to celebrate womanhood, to lift the women in our lives up, to celebrate the strides we have made as a society towards equality, as well as to honor the work that still needs to be done for complete gender equity. Women have touched, contributed to, and improved each and every facet of life we interact with daily, and herbalism is no different.
There are so many wonderful and inspiring female herbalists, and so in honor of this beautiful month, we'd like to share just a few whose practices made an impact on the WishGarden team.
Jeannine Parvati
Jeannine is the author of Hygieia: A Woman's Herbal, an encyclopedic work that details how specific herbs can aid in female-specific experiences like childbirth and menopause. She worked as a midwife for some time, a prenatal yoga teacher, and an activist. She is also credited with popularizing lotus birth in the United States.
Susun Weed
Susun first became interested in herbalism in 1965- and the rest is history. Her first book, Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year, was published in 1986, with many more works following. She now trains apprentices and oversees various courses.
Rosemary Gladstar
Rosemary has been writing and teaching about herbs for over 40 years! She is an author, steward, and mentor. She is also the Founding President of United Plant Savers, an organization dedicated to preserving medicinal plants across the country. Rosemary's life is closely intertwined with herbalism — before moving recently, she previously lived at Sage Mountain for 30+ years, where she taught and worked tirelessly.
And, of course, we want to honor our very own:
Catherine Hunziker
Catherine is a senior professional herbalist with over 20 years of experience in herbal formulation and education in her field. She previously taught at one of the first official herb schools, Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, in Boulder, Colorado. Now, she is the owner of WishGarden Herbs, which has provided quality organic remedies since the beginning of the herbal renaissance and has a reputation for skilled and elegantly effective formulations. Her teaching style is informative, interactive, and warm.
We'd also like to give a big THANK YOU to all of the other bad-ass women out there who support us all — our mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, daughters, partners, friends, teachers, and healers.
