ABOUT WISHGARDEN

Who is WishGarden Herbs?

WishGarden Herbs is a woman-owned, family-run herbal supplement company known for fast-acting liquid herbal tinctures and whole-herb formulas. We’ve been making herbal remedies since 1979, with roots in midwifery, traditional Western herbalism, and hands-on plant medicine. Today, we still make our products in our own NSF GMP and USDA Organic certified facility in Louisville, Colorado.

When was WishGarden founded and who founded it?

WishGarden was founded in 1979 in Boulder, Colorado by a midwife who began crafting tinctures to support midwives and the families they served. In 1987, nationally recognized herbalist, activist, and birth educator Catherine Hunziker purchased the company and grew it into a trusted national herbal wellness brand known for liquid herbal formulas.

Is WishGarden woman-owned and family-run?

Yes. WishGarden has been woman-owned and family-run since 1979. We’ve stayed independent so we can make decisions based on plants, people, and quality — not outside shareholders.

Where is WishGarden located?

WishGarden Herbs is based in Louisville, Colorado, just outside Boulder. We make our liquid herbal tinctures, salves, and oils in our own USDA Organic certified and NSF GMP certified facility. Our address is 321 S. Taylor Ave., Suite 100, Louisville, CO 80027.

What makes WishGarden unique?

WishGarden Herbs is unique because we were founded by a midwife, shaped by herbalists, and have stayed independent since 1979. We specialize in fast-acting liquid herbal tinctures made with time-tested Western herbs in thoughtful combinations. No trend-chasing — just carefully sourced plants, real herbalist experience, and nearly 50 years of making herbal remedies.

Is WishGarden a Certified B Corp?

Yes. WishGarden became a Certified B Corporation in May 2025 with a B Impact Score of 86.2. That means our social and environmental practices were independently reviewed — including how we treat people, source plants, manage environmental impact, and run the business. For us, B Corp Certification is third-party proof that our commitment to plants, people, and planet is more than a claim.

What is WishGarden's mission?

Our mission is to make herbalism more accessible and put plant-based wellness back in people’s hands. We create fast-acting liquid herbal tinctures and whole-herb formulas that help people care for themselves and their families in everyday life

How many people work at WishGarden?

WishGarden is a small, independent team of about 40 people based in Colorado. Our team includes people with backgrounds as certified herbalists, naturopathic doctors, clinical herbalists, doulas, nutritionists, and microbiology. Our customer care team are certified herbalists who actually answer the phone and help customers with real product questions.

Why do some of your products say "Kick-Ass"?

The Kick-Ass name came from customers. Catherine Hunziker formulated these blends as “teams of herbs” — combining immune-supporting, respiratory, lymphatic, warming, cooling, and balancing herbs instead of relying on one plant to do everything. People started calling the formulas “kick-ass,” and the name stuck. It is playful, but the formulation behind it is serious: fast-acting liquid herbal tinctures

What does it mean that WishGarden is America's #1 selling liquid herbal blends brand?

It means third-party retail sales data shows WishGarden is the top-selling brand in the liquid herbal blends category. The ranking comes from SPINS Total US Natural Channel data for the 52 weeks ending December 28, 2025, based on total dollar sales by brand. In plain English: more people bought WishGarden liquid herbal blends than any other liquid herbal blend brand in the natural retail stores tracked by SPINS during that period. The data reflects the SPINS-reported natural channel and does not include more convential retailers that do not report into that channel.

How is WishGarden different from other liquid herbal brands like Herb Pharm or Gaia Herbs?

WishGarden is different because of where we come from and how we formulate. We started in 1979 as a midwife-rooted herbal company, and we are still woman-owned, family-run, and independent today. Our formulas are built as teams of herbs, with each plant chosen for the role it plays in the whole formula — combining traditional Western herbal knowledge with practitioner experience, careful sourcing, and in-house manufacturing in Colorado. That independence matters because it lets us make long-term decisions around plants, formulas, sourcing, and quality.

TINCTURES 101

What is a liquid herbal tincture?

A liquid herbal tincture is a full-spectrum herbal extract made by drawing a broad range of naturally occurring plant constituents into a liquid base, usually alcohol and water or glycerin and water. Because the herbs are already extracted into liquid form, there is no capsule, tablet, or gummy to break down first. Tinctures are one of the oldest ways to take herbs, and they’ve been WishGarden’s specialty since 1979.

How do tinctures compare to capsules and tablets?

Capsules, tablets, and gummies deliver herbs in solid form, so the plant material has to break down before absorption can begin. WishGarden tinctures are already extracted into liquid form, making the plant constituents more readily available. They’re made without fillers, binders, gums, or added sugar, and they’re flexible by design — take them directly, mix them into water, or adjust serving size according to the label.

How are tinctures different from essential oils and homeopathics?

Liquid tinctures contain the whole spectrum of plant constituents, including volatile oils, alkaloids, and water-soluble compounds. Essential oils are highly concentrated steam-distilled oils, just one part of a plant's full chemistry. Homeopathic remedies are diluted to the point where no detectable amount of the original herb remains, working on an energetic principle. WishGarden tinctures are the whole plant, in a form your body can use right now.

What kind of alcohol do you use in your tinctures?

WishGarden uses certified organic, gluten-free, food-grade alcohol made from sugarcane as part of our herbal extraction process. Our current alcohol supply is Bonsucro certified for responsible & sustainable sugarcane production and chain of custody.

Why do you use alcohol in your tinctures?

Alcohol helps extract plant constituents that do not extract well in water or glycerin, including resins, alkaloids, terpenes, essential oils, and other alcohol-soluble compounds. It also helps preserve the finished tincture without artificial preservatives. WishGarden uses alcohol where it matters most — during extraction — while keeping the finished serving size small.

Why do your tinctures contain glycerin?

Vegetable glycerin helps extract certain plant constituents, including flavonoids, glycosides, and additional water-soluble compounds. It also gives the finished tincture a smoother taste and texture while still letting the herbs taste like herbs. In WishGarden formulas, glycerin is there because it plays a functional role in the extract.

What kind of glycerine do you use in your tintures?

WishGarden uses organic, plant-based vegetable glycerin that is not palm-derived. It is highly refined before use and sourced from South America through qualified suppliers that meet our quality and sourcing standards.

Where does the water you use in your tinctres come from?

The water in WishGarden tinctures comes from Eldorado Springs, near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder County, Colorado. It is natural spring water from a protected artesian source, known for its clean mineral profile.

Why do you use water in your tinctures?

Water is an important part of a full-spectrum herbal extract. Some plant constituents extract best in water, including minerals, mucilage, polysaccharides, and other water-soluble compounds. WishGarden uses Eldorado Springs water from Boulder County, Colorado as part of our extraction base so each herb can release a broader range of its naturally occurring plant chemistry.

Why don't your tinctures use sweeteners or flavorings?

Because tinctures are one of the most traditional ways to take herbs, and they’re supposed to taste like plants — not candy. WishGarden tinctures are made without added sweeteners, flavorings, or masking agents, so you experience the herbs as they are. In traditional herbalism, taste matters: bitter, earthy, and aromatic flavors are part of how people have worked with herbs for generations. If the taste is too bold, mix your serving into a small amount of water, juice, or tea.

How long do your tinctures last?

WishGarden tinctures carry a 3-year expiration date for retail sale. Traditional alcohol-based tinctures are known for long shelf life when stored properly because alcohol helps preserve the extract. For best quality, use your tincture by the expiration date printed on the bottle and store it tightly closed, away from heat, light, and moisture.

SOURCING & SUSTAINABILITY

Where do your herbs come from?

Most of our herbs are sourced domestically whenever possible. In our current sourcing review, 63% of our botanical ingredients are grown or wild-harvested in the U.S. We work with farms, growers, forest farmers, wildcrafters, and plant stewards, and we also source internationally when a plant grows best in another region or is not reliably available domestically at the quality we need. Across our sourcing, we prioritize organic, regenerative organic, FairWild, forest-farmed, and ethically wildcrafted herbs.

What does "regenerative" sourcing mean for WishGarden?

Regenerative goes beyond organic. Our regenerative organic-certified farms focus on people, plants, and soil together: rebuilding soil health, paying fair wages, and harvesting in ways that let plant populations thrive for generations. Today, 25% of our botanicals come from Regenerative Organic Certified farms, and our overall sourcing is 98% organic, regenerative, sustainably wild-crafted, or forest farmed.

What is FairWild and why does WishGarden support it?

FairWild is a certification standard for responsibly harvested wild plants. It helps protect the plants, the habitats they grow in, and the collectors who harvest them. In 2025, WishGarden became the first North American FairWild registered brand, partnering with one of our Appalachian forest farmers, to help bring more ethical wild-harvested herbs into verified supply chains. Today, more than half of our of the wild-collected and forest-farmed herbs we use by pound are FairWild Certified, and we are continuing to support more partners in moving toward certification.

How do you vet your suppliers?

Every supplier goes through WishGarden’s supplier qualification process before we use their herbs. We review sourcing practices, certifications, quality systems, species identification, Certificates of Analysis, and testing for microbes and contaminants. For wildcrafters and growers, we also review land stewardship and harvesting practices. If a supplier does not meet our standards, we do not use them.

Do you work with named farm partners?

Yes. We work directly with many farm, forest-farm, and wild-harvest partners, and some of those relationships go back decades. When we have permission, we share partner names and stories, including Regenerative Organic Certified farms like Oshala Farm and Trout Lake Farm in Oregon, L’Herbier du Diois in France, and FairWild collectors like Daniel and Asher. We keep some partner details private to protect people and the plants.

Why are some of your ingredients wildcrafted instead of farmed?

Some medicinal plants do not grow well in standard farm fields. They thrive best in forests, mountains, riparian areas, or wild ecosystems where they have traditionally grown. When we use wildcrafted herbs, we work with trained collectors, forest farmers, and sourcing partners who understand the land and harvest in a way that supports future plant growth. This is also part of WishGarden’s Biodiversity Initiative: our long-term work to protect at-risk medicinal plants through responsible wild harvest, FairWild certification, forest farming, cultivation, and habitat restoration.

What is WishGarden Herbs’ Biodiversity Initiative?

WishGarden’s Biodiversity Initiative is our long-term work to protect the medicinal plants we depend on. Some herbs used in traditional herbalism are slow-growing, habitat-specific, or increasingly vulnerable in the wild. Instead of treating those plants as unlimited ingredients, we work plant by plant to build better paths forward — including FairWild certification, forest farming, cultivation of at-risk herbs like Yerba Mansa and Osha, and local habitat restoration. Simply put: if we depend on a plant, we have a responsibility to help protect its future.

How does WishGarden protect at-risk herbs like Osha and Goldenseal?

WishGarden protects at-risk herbs by changing how we source and formulate when a plant needs extra care. For Osha, we reduced our use, incorporated Lovage as a more widely available botanical analog where appropriate, and purchased the first cultivated Osha available in North America. For Goldenseal, we use FairWild Certified forest-farmed supply from Appalachia. This is part of our Biodiversity Initiative: protecting important medicinal plants, plant by plant.

Is your packaging sustainable?

WishGarden uses recyclable glass bottles for our liquid herbal tinctures. For the plastic still required for caps, pumps, droppers, and manufacturing, we are Plastic Neutral Certified through rePurpose Global. That means we calculate the plastic we use and help fund verified projects that collect, sort, and recycle the same amount of nature-bound plastic into useful materials like bricks and playground equipment.

What is WishGarden doing to reduce its environmental impact?

WishGarden works to reduce our environmental impact through renewable energy, carbon offsets, plastic recovery, waste reduction, water stewardship, and local habitat work. Through EcoCart, we have offset 3,504,826 lbs of CO₂ emissions by supporting rainforest protection in Brazil. Through rePurpose Global, we have recovered 13,888 lbs of plastic by supporting verified plastic recovery and recycling in West Java, Indonesia. Our Colorado facility also uses renewable energy, and we continue working to reduce waste, conserve resources, and support local restoration projects like Coal Creek habitat work.

Is your glycerin sustainable?

Yes. All of our organic vegetable glycerin is non-palm derived. We carefully select and test suppliers to make sure they meet our standards for both sustainability and quality.

DISCOUNTS

Do you offer discounts?

Yes, on occasion, WishGarden offers discounts to shop on the site. The best way to stay informed of promotions we're running is to subscribe to our weekly email newsletter. You can subscribe to our email here; unsubscribe anytime.

Why isn't my discount code working?

The discount code you received may not be working for a couple reasons. (1) The code may have expired. (2) You didn't meet the requirements of the discount code. For example, some discount codes are triggered when you have $50 or more in your shopping basket.

USAGE

Can I give adult formulas to kids?

For children under 12: in some cases, yes - in the proper amount. However, we recommend you stick to the children's products as these have been formulated specifically with kids in mind. Consult an herbal or natural therapies practitioner before giving any adult formulas to children. Children 12 years and older can take adult formulas.

Should I take your formulas under the tongue?

While it is true that the area under our tongues is highly absorbable, we do not recommend placing our products under the tongue, as the alcohol content can be irritating to this sensitive area. It is not necessary for the formulas to be effective.

What does "as needed" mean on the label?

We are all unique and herbs can work differently for different people. The usage instructions on the label are written to be applicable to a general population. However, that doesn't mean they are optimum for you and the discomforts you are experiencing. "As needed" means you should take the amount listed at a needed frequency until you feel the desired effect.

Can I mix two or more formulas, or take them together?

Many people enjoy mixing combinations; however, those with a complicated medical history or on prescription drugs should consult their natural therapies practitioner.

Will I still get the same effect if I put the extract in another liquid (juice, tea, etc.)?

Yes for most formulas diluting them in common drinks can improve taste, and will not compromise the formula's effect. Just use the recommended amount, and repeat if necessary for full effect. Please note that to receive the full effect of bitters, you must taste them and dilution is not recommended.

Can diabetics take glycerin?

Yes. Glycerin is also called glycerol and is a plant-based substance that is molecularly similar to alcohol. It belongs to the family of sugar alcohols, such as malitol, sorbitol, and xylitol, considered safe for diabetics.

Are there any formulas that I should not mix?

We recommend that you avoid using the adult formulas while pregnant or breastfeeding unless advised to do so by your natural therapies practitioner.

How do you use a pump top?

The pump tops were designed to make it easy to take your extracts on the go: you simply pump them directly into your mouth or add to juice or water. Each pump is equivalent to approximately half a dropper.

How do you use a Jigger cup?

The jigger cups were designed to make taking your formula(s) of choice convenient. One dropperful is approximately 1 mL; therefore the 3 mL mark on the jigger cup is approximately equivalent to 3 droppersful. Jiggers are also great for refilling smaller bottles.

I'm on a gluten-free diet. Are there any formulas that I should avoid?

None of our formulas contain gluten. The pure Italian wheat-based grain alcohol we use leaves all gluten behind when distilled, and comes with a gluten-free test certificate.

EFFICACY

How do herbal extracts compare to tablets or capsules?

Most capsules either contain powdered, dry herbs, or a tiny bit of liquid extract (gel caps). Tablets are powdered herbs held together by pressure and other chemicals. The beauty of liquid extracts, or "tinctures," is that they absorb quickly and the body receives the full benefit of the plant in a very bio-available solution.

How do liquid extracts differ from essential oils or homeopathics?

Liquid extracts are made with whole herbs in their natural form combined with alcohol and water, allowing for the extraction of a whole mosaic of plant constituents. Essential oils are concentrated extracts using a steam distillation process. Homeopathic remedies are diluted to such a degree that no detectable amount of the herb actually remains in the finished product.

How long will it take for the formula to have an effect?

Many of our common symptom-soothing formulas are designed to take effect within 5-10 minutes if used properly. To get these fast-acting results, we recommend 3-4 droppersful, or 6-8 pumps, per use to start. Note that some of our formulas are tonics and are meant to work over longer periods of time.

PRODUCT DETAILS

What type of alcohol do you use in your products? Is it gluten-free?

We use a certified organic alcohol from Italy and it is certified gluten-free. As alcohol does not contain protein in the finished product, it cannot contain gluten.

Why are you using Osha? Isn't it endangered?

Osha is not endangered but it is at-risk. We've reduced our osha root use by reformulating a number of formulas. All of our products containing osha root are made with sustainable certified organic osha root.

Where do your herbs come from?

We get our herbs from various sources. Most are grown or wild harvested in the United States and Europe. We do also receive a handful from Asia (all organic). All of our vendors must go through a rigorous in-house verification process to be approved.

How do we test the herbs we receive and use?

Our vendors must prove that their herbs are properly tested for microbial counts and properly identified to genus and species. Our QC team will personally test each batch of herb organoleptically (sight, smell, taste) and microscopically as needed. Our QC team includes a botanist and a clinical herbalist.

Are your products organic?

We source organic raw ingredients whenever possible, including any cultivated herbs used and the alcohol in the tinctures. Many of our raw herbs are also wildcrafted. Most of our Bodycare products are USDA certified organic.

Are your products non-GMO?

Yes, we make a point to ensure that our raw ingredients are GMO-free. Most of the herbs we use are not at risk of being GMO. For ingredients that are at risk, they are almost always certified organic. However, our products do not currently have Non-GMO Verification or any other non-GMO certification.

Why is there 190 proof alcohol in your formulas?

Alcohol is a sustainable and body-friendly extracting medium. It effectively releases the active constituents from coarse plant material and prevents the product from spoiling. WishGarden has developed a proprietary process that uses alcohol to maximum benefit during the extracting phase, while minimizing it in the finished product.

I'm a recovering alcoholic. Is it safe for me to take your product?

We do not recommend alcohol extracts for those recovering from alcohol addiction. We recommend that water extracts such as teas and infusions, or powdered herb capsules be used instead.

Are your products Kosher?

While some of our ingredients are kosher, we are not a certified kosher facility. We receive raw materials from various suppliers.

Is your glycerin sustainable?

Yes, we take sustainability seriously. All of our organic vegetable glycerin is non-palm derived. We carefully select and test various suppliers to meet our high standards.

Are there common allergens in your products, such as nuts, dairy, soy and corn?

Our products are soy, gluten and dairy free. Most of our products are also free of corn. The exception would be any formulas that contain cornsilk, including Urinary Strength, Growing Pains for Kids, and Kidney Strength.

PREGNANCY + POSTPARTUM

What formulas can I take while breastfeeding?

WishGarden's Pregnancy formulas are the products of choice while nursing. We suggest you consult a natural therapies practitioner before taking any other formulas.

Is it okay to take multiple formulas while breastfeeding?

It is okay to take more than one of the pregnancy and lactation formulas at the same time while breastfeeding.

Why does WishGarden use alcohol in children and pregnancy formulas?

Using a small amount of alcohol in the Pregnancy and Children's lines was a conscious decision. It enables us to keep the strength and efficaciousness of the formula intact but is also gentle and appropriate for women and children. WishGarden's finished extract contains a minimal amount of alcohol per serving, similar to what is found in kombucha and ripe bananas.
